Is your sole trader accounting actually on track?

Answer five quick questions and get a clear, honest next step based on where you are right now.

WHAT I DO

What I handle on your behalf

From your first year of trading to ongoing annual compliance, I take care of the accounting side so you can focus on the work that earns you money.

01

Self Assessment Tax Return

I prepare and file your Self Assessment return with HMRC, working out your tax bill accurately and making sure you claim every allowable expense. You do not need to understand the forms. I walk you through what I need, do the number work, and confirm the figures before anything is submitted.

Annual filing included
02

Bookkeeping and Records

Keeping your income and expenses organised throughout the year is what makes everything else easier at tax time. I set you up on cloud accounting software, QuickBooks, FreeAgent or another platform that fits how you work, and I keep your records tidy on an ongoing basis. No shoeboxes. No last-minute scramble.

Monthly or quarterly
03

Tax Planning for Sole Traders

Most sole traders pay more tax than they need to because nobody has ever sat down and looked at what is actually deductible for their type of work. I review your income, your expenses and your position each year and make sure your tax bill reflects what you genuinely owe, nothing more. I also keep you informed about changes like Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, which affects sole traders earning over £50,000 from April 2026.

Year-round advice
WHY IT WORKS

Why clients come back every year

It comes down to knowing exactly who is looking after their accounts and being able to reach that person when it matters.

You always deal with me directly

I handle every client personally. There are no junior staff, no account managers and no one else picking up your file. When you email or call, you get me. That matters when you have a question that needs a real answer, not a holding reply.

Fixed fees with no surprises

You know what you pay before we start. My fees are fixed and agreed upfront, so there is no clock running every time you send a question. Sole traders often hold back from asking things because they are worried about being charged. That should not happen.

Cloud accounting that actually works for you

I am a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and FreeAgent partner, and I am proficient in Xero and Sage as well. Whichever platform suits the way you run your business, I will set it up, show you how to use it and keep it working properly. Making Tax Digital is coming for most sole traders in the next few years, and being set up correctly now means there is nothing to panic about later.

FROM CLIENTS I WORK WITH

What clients say

★★★★★

“I had been doing my own returns for three years and had no idea how much I was missing. Luke went through everything, claimed expenses I did not know were allowable and my tax bill came down significantly. The process was straightforward from start to finish.”

Sole Trader, Carpentry
★★★★★

“I started freelancing and had no clue what I was supposed to be keeping track of. Luke set me up on bookkeeping software, explained what counts as an expense in plain terms and made the whole thing feel manageable. I actually feel in control of my finances now.”

J.T.
Freelance Graphic Designer
★★★★★

“Quick responses, no jargon and he always explains what he is doing and why. I have recommended Luke to two other sole traders I know. Having someone I can actually ring when something confuses me is worth its weight.”

GETTING STARTED

How it works

Four straightforward steps from first contact to having your accounting sorted.

01

Book a free call

We spend 20 to 30 minutes on a call where I find out about your work, your current setup and what you actually need. No obligation, no sales pressure. You ask me whatever you want and I give you a straight answer.

02

I put together a fixed fee quote

Based on what you tell me, I give you a clear quote for the services that make sense for your situation. The fee covers everything we agree. You will not be billed for a phone call or a quick email later on.

03

We get your records sorted

If your bookkeeping is behind or your records are in a mess, we start there. I set up cloud accounting software if you do not already use it, and I get your income and expenses organised. It does not matter where you are starting from.

04

Ongoing accounting, handled

From that point on, I keep your books up to date, file your Self Assessment on time, and flag anything HMRC-related before it becomes a problem. You focus on your work. I focus on the numbers.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Common questions

You can file your own Self Assessment, and many sole traders do. The question is whether doing it yourself is costing you more in missed expenses and time than an accountant would charge. Most of my sole trader clients find that having someone review their records properly results in a lower tax bill, often by more than my fee. I am happy to be honest about whether hiring me makes financial sense for your situation on a free call.
No, and this comes up more often than you might think. HMRC requires you to keep records, but there is usually a way to reconstruct what you need from bank statements, invoices and payment history. I have helped plenty of sole traders work backwards through a messy year and get everything filed accurately. The sooner you start, the more straightforward it is.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires sole traders to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC instead of a single annual return. From April 2026, it applies to sole traders with income over £50,000 per year. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. If you are above these levels or approaching them, getting the right software in place now means the transition is straightforward rather than a rush.
The rule is that an expense must be wholly and exclusively for business purposes. In practice, that covers things like tools and equipment, professional subscriptions, mileage, work-related training and a proportion of phone costs. If you work from home, part of your household bills may be claimable too. A lot of sole traders claim too little because they are not sure what counts. Part of what I do is make sure you claim everything you are entitled to, within the rules.
